Since preschool education is key to a good start in school, there had long been talk of setting up a farm kindergarten at Farm Hamburg, where the approximately 40 children of farm workers could be prepared for school: learning colors, basic arithmetic, writing, how to use pens, scissors, and other materials, or even leafing through picture books and singing children’s songs. None of this is part of everyday life for the children who grow up in small huts with their parents, most of whom did not experience such a childhood themselves.
But those who don’t bring basic knowledge to school will fall behind in first grade. We are therefore delighted that, thanks to the generous support of farmer Heiko Beckers, who will run the kindergarten with his company GreenLab, and a generous donor family from Germany, who is financing the construction of the farm kindergarten through fly&help, we will soon be able to open the farm kindergarten. In addition to education, there will be healthy meals, because it’s hard to learn on an empty stomach.
